For a basic air miles credit card the No Fee American Express Credit Card is an ok card. It doesn't provide many bells and whistles but it does allow you to collect at a rate of 1 airmile for every $20 spent and has no yearly fee!

The BMO Gold Mastercard costs $99 per year and allows you to collect at 1 for every $15 spent. It also has quite a few more bells and whistles including Collision Damage Waiver coverage for car rentals, warranty protection and 25% discount on AIR MILES flights worldwide!

The last feature (25% Discount on AIR MILES flights worldwide) is the biggest one to take into consideration. If you ARE planning to take a flight (using your air miles) than the BMO credit card is worth it otherwise you might want to select a different card where you can either collect faster or for free. Saving 25% on your Air Miles flight
For example, If you are traveling from Vancouver, BC to Toronto, Ontario it'll cost you between 3125 (low season) or 4255 (high season) Air Miles. Now if you save 25% on those flights it'll only cost you 2344 or 3191 Air Miles. That's a savings of 781 or 1063 Air Miles!

To collect that same amount of miles on a free credit card you'll need to spend $15,620 or $21,620 (1063 airmiles * $20/airmile). That's a lot of money! So by spending $99 for your BMO Gold Mastercard your credit card will pay for itself quickly!

The key point is to make the yearly fee worth it you MUST be booking a flight using your air miles. If this isn't the case than another credit card might be better suited for your needs. You should also be careful that you don't just hold onto the card year after year if you aren't planning to book a flight with your air miles.

In this comparison I'll use three test cases which include the maximum RONA gift card, just below the maximum gift card and lower amount.

Test Case #1 - Spending $20,001 in a year on the credit card
RONA Airm Miles Credit Card = 1000 Airmiles + $1000 in RONA Gift Cards
Platinum Air Miles Credit Card = 1333 Airmiles
Basic Mastercard = 1000 Airmiles

Test Case #2 - Spending $9,999 in a year on the credit card
RONA Credit Card = 499 Airmiles + $400 in RONA Gift Cards
Platinum Air Miles Credit Card = 666 Airmiles
Basic Mastercard = 499 Airmiles

Test Case #3 - Spending $3,001 in a year on the credit card
RONA Credit Card = 150 Airmiles + $60 in RONA Gift Cards
Platinum Air Miles Credit Card = 200 Airmiles
Basic Mastercard = 150 Airmiles

What this doesn't take into consideration is the added bonuses of the other credit cards. The Platinum Air Miles Credit Card provides Car Rental Theft and Damage Insurance and 350 bonus airmiles when you first use your credit card, however, it costs $50 a year. The BMO credit card provides a discount on the number of airmiles for flights and 150 bonus miles but costs $99 per year.

All in all, I would say that the RONA credit card is probably the best NO FEE Air Miles credit card as you get cash-back (gift cards) and Air Miles when using your card. This card is especially good if you make a large purchase on your card within the first 30 days.

While researching the credit cards for this article I found an Aeroplan credit card that might be better than the airmiles credit cards. I've included this one Aeroplan card for completeness.

To show a good example of which card you should choose I decided to give two example of spending $15,000 and $100,000 per year for 2 years. I chose two years as some cards give bonuses for the first year only. Obviously, I'm overlooking some factors like where they money is being spent, number of people using the card, etc.... However, this may help you to draw conclusions on which card to apply for based on the number of points and spending amount.

Spending $15,000 / year for 2 years
American Express Airmiles = 750 airmiles / year + 100 = 1600 Airmiles (Card Costs: $0)
BMO Bronze Mastercard = 375 airmiles / year = 750 Airmiles (Card Costs: $0)
BMO Silver Mastercard = 750 airmiles / year = 1500 Airmiles (Card Costs: $120)
BMO Gold Mastercard = 1000 airmiles / year = 2000 Airmiles (Card Costs: $210)
American Express Aeroplan = 15000 aeroplan / year + 25,000 = 55,000 Aeroplan points (Card Costs: $180)
Assuming that you need at least 900 Airmiles to fly and 15,000 Aeroplan points. The two best cards are the American Express Airmiles credit card and the American Express Aeroplan card is the best deal as it will get you over three flights

Spending $100,000 / year for 2 years
American Express Airmiles = 5000 airmiles / year + 100 = 10,100 Airmiles (Card Costs: $0)
BMO Bronze Mastercard = 2500 airmiles / year = 5000 Airmiles (Card Costs: $0)
BMO Silver Mastercard = 5000 airmiles / year = 10,000 Airmiles (Card Costs: $120)
BMO Gold Mastercard = 6667 airmiles / year = 13,333 Airmiles (Card Costs: $210)
American Express Aeroplan = 100,000 aeroplan / year + 40,000 / year + 25,000 = 305,000 Aeroplan points (Card Costs: $180)

Assuming that you need at least 900 airmiles to fly and 15,000 aeroplan points. The Aeroplan card is far and away the as it's 11 flights vs. 20 flights.

Starbucks (or others) - $50 = 0 airmiles
Total = 7 airmiles

With an American Express Platinum Credit Card
Safeway - $100 = 5 airmiles + 10 airmiles (1 for every $10 with credit card)
Shell - $30 = 1 airmiles + 3 airmiles (1 for every $10 with credit card)
Rona - $30 = 1 airmiles + 3 airmiles (1 for every $10 with credit card)
Starbucks (or others) - $50 = 0 airmiles + 3 airmiles
Total = 7 airmiles + 19 airmiles = 26 airmiles

I know this example doesn't look like a lot (only 19 airmiles). However, imagine this throughout a whole year (364 vs. 1352) and buying more stuff with your credit card will earn more points. As you can see it can REALLY add up!
