Analyze Changes to the BMO Gold Mosaik Mastercard

Yesterday I let everyone know that the BMO Gold Mosaik Mastercard's terms are being changed.

In the article that had the news release about the new card the title of the article was "BMO Revamps its Mosaik Gold AIR MILES MasterCard to Offer Unparalleled Redemption Value for Travellers". Then right under that as a sub-headline "Higher earning power and lower redemption costs put this plan miles ahead of competitive programs"

Although, I don't think these claims are false. They are over-exaggerating the improvements to the card and not mentioning the downsides to the change.

Yes, you do get discounts on flight around the world now. However, any place you fly that is actually of significant distance will cost over 2000 airmiles. Anything over 2000 airmiles is a worse deal then previously as a normal flight costing 2000 airmiles at a 20% discount ends up being 1600 airmile (same as before).

Furthermore, the average person would not have used their airmiles to fly to Europe as the number of airmiles necessary is extremely high!

This is an improvement. Previously, WestJetwas the only carrier that you could use and get a discount with the card. Therefore, you were limited to the number of locations that WestJetflies in continental north America.

As mentioned, previously only WestJetwas available at a discount.

This is achieved by keeping the same 1 airmile for every $15 spent. However, now at Shell gas you'll get 2 airmiles for every $15 spent. In my opinion, this is a very small change and difficult to tell me that I can 'build rewards faster' with this addition. It'll be a little faster but a significant increase won't be noticed on my statement.

So why the change?

That's what everyone's asking me and to be honest I don't know for sure. I've heard rumors that WestJetis coming out with their own airmiles credit card reward program. Whether that's true or not remains to be seen.

If you are gold air miles member, you get 40% off long haul flights within canada.

That’s what it used to be, I don’t know if it will remain that way though.

I just got a letter last week saying I would get 40% off flights for being a gold member.

Nice! Thanks for letting us know. I’ll dig around and see what I can find out about this offer being available to more people.

Isn’t being gold great?
