Change to BMO Gold Mosaik Mastercard

Here is a VERY important change to the BMO Gold Mosaik Mastercard. The changes affect how you’ll be collecting free flights with the card.

Previously you were able to book a flight with Westjet for a maximum of 1600 airmiles to travel anywhere that WestJetflies. The credit card has now changed. From the press released.

Basically, the new format is you’ll get 20% off the total airmiles for the flight. As well, you don’t have to book with WestJetanymore and can book with Air Canada as well. This looks like a change for the worse. Previously, you could book a flight from Calgary to Las Vegas for a total of 1600 airmiles. A regular flight costs between 2250 - 2900 so this same flight would now cost 1750 - 2620 airmiles.

I guess the only improvement to the card is if you were flying a shorter distance. Let’s assume you’re flying from Calgary to Kelowna. Previously, it would cost you 900 airmiles, regardless of having the card. With this change you’ll now save 20% from that 900 airmile total.

Either way I’m fairly disappointed with the change to the card and not really sure if still paying the $90 fee is worth it. If you do have the card and want to take advantage of the current situation you must book by July 2008.

A full breakdown to determine how the changes affect us card carriers is in the works. I’ve also added a poll to the right to see what people’s thoughts are on the new change through the poll.

This is ridiculous. I’m going to book a bunch of flights for the year at 1400/1600 and then ditch the card. I don’t know how BMO thinks this is better for its customers. I’m not happy at all.

Yes. This is definitely the way to go. Book some flights to places you want to go in the next year. Great thinking!

you can only book for flights up to 11 months in advance.
I tried to book yesterday but they only had flights up to March 2009.

Its too bad that West Jet is trying for their own program.
They didnt resign the deal, so thats why this is happening.

20% kinda sucks.. it should be 30%. I mean, we pay a $90 fee.. it should be at least a comparible deal to what west jet offered.

40% off long haul flights within Canada is good..but that is only for Gold BMO card + Gold air miles member.. and its only for one year.

It’s not about BMO making you happy, its about the BMO ticker price on the TSX.

Layne you’re totally right …. BMO needs to keep making money (not that they’re not making enough) and that card probably wasn’t making a ton.

We hate this new program and will likely ditch our current Mosaik Gold program card due to the Air Mile program changes.
It’s a bit sad actually because we liked travelling with Westjet and being able to use the Air Miles to justify going to see out of town family without the normal high dollar costs.
We give this new program a huge two thumbs DOWN and will go looking for other options with other banking institutions!

Hi Al,

Yeah lots of people have been very unhappy about the changes to the program. I’d recommend looking at either the free american express credit card or the monthly fee american express credit card. Both are good cards to collect fast… but neither gets that sweet westjet bonus (none of them do). More info on both of these cards here….

I just found out that I got ripped off by BMO & West Jet. Just called BMO customer service & told me that West Jet paid a penalty not to honor their contract & left customers like me behind. I have paid 90$ for 3 years & collected 7600 air miles. The same plane ticket (Vancouver-Ottawa) now requires 200% more air miles.. how low can you get, I just feel sorry for the administration at these companies.. looked at their claim following the announcement, BMO said they are happy to announce that the new Mosaik gold card will now allow users to accumulate air miles faster, what a lie, let’s sue those criminals..

Hi Charles,

Yes the change is really really bad. However, they did give everyone quite a bit of warning. As you can see I posted this back in April 2008.

Yes, it will cost you more airmiles to fly. If I may suggest I’d recommend trying to get Gold Status and then you can usually get 10 - 20% off of your airmiles flights. It’s not the previous 1600 airmiles but it’s a savings nonetheless.

Also, I recommend either the free american express credit card or the yearly fee american express credit card if you’re looking for another one to collect airmiles.

Cheers,
Sleuth

I just found out that the gold mastercard I paid for 1 year ago no longer gives me the advantage of the 1600 air miles bonus for flying with west jet in North Amerca. I am really upset as it is the only way I can afford to visit my family. Not only that but my fee went up more than double as I turned 65, so I think that paying for gold mc is of no advantage to me now. I am really upset about this decision.
