Airmile for flights - Part II
This is the second in an ongoing series of: spending your airmiles for flights, the fees involved in airmiles flights and tips and tricks to flying. Part 1 can be found here
To optimally use your airmiles for free flights I find it best to do the following:
Find how much the flight normally costs (this is probably the tax you’ll pay)
- Determine if the flight is on sale somewhere (no point wasting the points)
- Find out how many airmiles are needed to fly
- Multiply the airmiles needed by 0.143
- This is the cost per airmile to get a Safeway Gift Certificate
- If this number is less then the cost of the flight before taxes (you’ll pay taxes on either flights) then book the flight
Basically what you’re doing is figuring out
a) if you’re better off buying the flight?
or
b) getting the flight ‘for free’ with airmiles
Remember to always book early as you don’t want to be disappointed. If anyone else has had experience with this please leave a comment. Myself and my readers would love to hear from you.
